I focus on turning my belt buckle toward the target to initiate the downswing. Is this in line with your method?

I think turning your belt buckle is a great visualization.  Two things come to mind.

1.  Make sure that as you turn your belt buckle, you don't leave the arms/club behind.  You want the downswing rotation to bring the arms/club back down and around to the left (right hander). 

2.  This is a continuous, accelerating motion.  It can also be fast or slow for different results, but always accelerating and complete.  Another check point will be, if you've turned completely, your knees will be touching and your back foot will be totally up on the back toe.  Your belt buckle might actually point a little left of the target when complete.
